It was an honor to join so many people to witness the naming of Spinks Field at the LaGrange Callaway Airport last Thursday morning.

Roy Spinks was an outstanding business man with exceptional notice to detail. He was a known leader in commercial real estate in the West Central Georgia and East Alabama areas with an exquisite leadership style. He loved his family dearly and he also loved flying.

During his time Roy served as Chairman of the Troup County Airport Authority as well as a leader in many other groups in Troup County and the surrounding areas on both local and state levels. Those who knew him respected his hard work and decision making.

Roy passed away in 2014 after a short battle with a rare illness.

The last piece of commercial property that he brokered and sold was the Neighborhood Walmart off LaFayette Parkway in LaGrange. In 2015, he was first honored by the City of LaGrange when they named the road to Walmart “Roy Spinks Drive”. Every time I pass that street, it brings a smile to my face.

John Roy Spinks, III

As a Partner and President at Coldwell Banker Spinks Brown Durand REALTORS, he led the company with excellence and integrity.

As mentioned in the naming ceremony, he was well taught and a respected member of this community. He grew up alongside his parents in the real estate firm. As I watched his mother at the unveiling this morning, I couldn’t help but think how proud she was. With that great big smile of hers, I’m certain she was thinking, “Well done, son.”

The entire Spinks family beamed with pride knowing what their son, husband and father meant to this community.

As we watched a plane take off during the ceremony, it was a fitting moment. My thoughts of this great man made me smile. Roy was an encourager. He led by example. He never raised his voice. It was not uncommon for him to ask for your opinion. He had a way of bringing peace to any occasion.

This week is the 5 year anniversary of his death. Roy Spinks will never be forgotten because he has touched so many lives in such positive ways. The next time a plane flies overhead, I know I will think of him

 Fly high, Roy, fly high!
