It was an honor to join so many people to witness the naming of Spinks Field at the LaGrange Callaway Airport last Thursday morning.

Roy Spinks was an outstanding business man with exceptional notice to detail. He was a known leader in commercial real estate in the West Central Georgia and East Alabama areas with an exquisite leadership style. He loved his family dearly and he also loved flying.

During his time Roy served as Chairman of the Troup County Airport Authority as well as a leader in many other groups in Troup County and the surrounding areas on both local and state levels. Those who knew him respected his hard work and decision making.

Roy passed away in 2014 after a short battle with a rare illness.

The last piece of commercial property that he brokered and sold was the Neighborhood Walmart off LaFayette Parkway in LaGrange. In 2015, he was first honored by the City of LaGrange when they named the road to Walmart “Roy Spinks Drive”. Every time I pass that street, it brings a smile to my face.

John Roy Spinks, III

As a Partner and President at Coldwell Banker Spinks Brown Durand REALTORS, he led the company with excellence and integrity.

As mentioned in the naming ceremony, he was well taught and a respected member of this community. He grew up alongside his parents in the real estate firm. As I watched his mother at the unveiling this morning, I couldn’t help but think how proud she was. With that great big smile of hers, I’m certain she was thinking, “Well done, son.”

The entire Spinks family beamed with pride knowing what their son, husband and father meant to this community.

As we watched a plane take off during the ceremony, it was a fitting moment. My thoughts of this great man made me smile. Roy was an encourager. He led by example. He never raised his voice. It was not uncommon for him to ask for your opinion. He had a way of bringing peace to any occasion.

This week is the 5 year anniversary of his death. Roy Spinks will never be forgotten because he has touched so many lives in such positive ways. The next time a plane flies overhead, I know I will think of him

 Fly high, Roy, fly high!

The last piece of commercial property brokered and sold by local real estate icon Roy Spinks before his untimely death last September was what is now the new Walmart Neighborhood Market on LaFayette Parkway. Therefore, as a tribute to his efforts, as well as a lifelong commitment to business development throughout the community, the road leading to the store from the parkway has officially been named Roy Spinks Drive.

The LaGrange City Council heard the second reading and gave final approval to an ordinance on Tuesday authorizing the name designation, followed by an unveiling of the road sign during a special ceremony Wednesday morning, which was attended by members of Mr. Spinks’ family.

“Roy lived by a very simple agenda – he put faith, family and the future of this community first, and he did business with unquestionable integrity”, said LaGrange Mayor Jim Thornton. “The council and I are honored to memorialize his more than 40 years of service to our community”.

Roy Spinks passed away on September 17, 2014, after battling a rare illness known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, a degenerative brain disorder that affects about one in every one-million people per year worldwide. The illness usually appears later in life and has a mortality rate of 90 percent for those diagnosed within the first year.

Mr. Spinks was a senior partner with Coldwell Banker Spinks-Brown-Durand Realtors in LaGrange, and was a member of the national, state and local realtor associations. He was also very active in community and civic organizations as President of Twin Cedars Foundation, Community Bank and Trust Board, and the LaGrange College Center for Community Studies.

Among other positions spanning three decades, Mr. Spinks was Past Chairman of the Troup County Airport Authority, West Georgia Tech Foundation, Troup County Transportation Authority and LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce. He also served as Past President of United Way of West Georgia, LaGrange Lions Club and Highland Country Club.

“Throughout his life as a business and civic leader, Roy’s dedication and commitment to excellence made a positive impact on all of us, and we are still reaping the benefits today”, added Mayor Thornton at the conclusion of Wednesday’s ceremony.

Spinks Brown Durand Field Trip- Explorations In Antiquities

Coldwell Banker Spinks Brown Durand visited one of the area’s fascinating attractions. Explorations In Antiquities is a biblical museum located in LaGrange. As stated on the center’s website, “The highlight of any visit to The Explorations in Antiquity Center is a walk through the archaeological garden where full-scale replicas of structures relevant to daily life in Biblical times bring history to life.”

A recently added feature is an artifacts gallery, “…one of only 7 museums worldwide, the fourth in the US, and the only museum in the Southeast to have a long-term collection of artifacts from the Israel Antiquities Authority.  These artifacts are from the National  Treasures of Israel.”
